A 72-year-old Brighton & Hove Albion fan has died after falling ill during the second half of the club’s Premier League opener against Fulham.

Despite the swift response from emergency services, medical staff, and club officials, efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber, in a statement reported by BBC Sport on Saturday, said, “We are devastated by the loss of one of our fans at today’s match. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the gentleman’s family and friends.

“This was a deeply distressing moment for everyone involved, and we are committed to supporting those affected in the days ahead.”

The game, which ended 1-1, was not halted.

Officials explained that stopping play could have interfered with resuscitation efforts and posed complications if the patient had responded and needed urgent hospital transfer.
