Human remains discovered in the Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve, Illinois, have been identified as belonging to a Nigerian woman, Olasinmibo Abosede, popularly known as Sinmi, who had been missing since July 30.
Authorities said the body was found around 1:55 p.m. near the intersection of 83rd Street and Chandelle Drive after officers were led through dense high grass to the scene. Police confirmed that the clothing on the deceased matched what Abosede was last seen wearing.
Naperville Police Chief, Jason Arres, in a statement, said while the remains are believed to be Sinmi, final confirmation will come from the DuPage County Coroner’s Office.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss and extend our sincere condolences to the Abosede family during this difficult time,” Arres said. “We ask that everyone keep the family in your thoughts and respect their privacy.”
Abosede, 42, was last seen leaving her home near Springbrook Golf Course for a walk. Surveillance footage captured her walking away from the neighborhood at about 9:20 a.m. on July 30 in the 2100 block of Sudbury Street. She was dressed in a long-sleeved black Adidas jacket, grey sweatpants, a black headscarf, and black Crocs.
Her disappearance had prompted extensive search efforts, with volunteers and canine teams combing the Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve.
Forest Preserve District Police Chief, David Pederson, said: “Our hearts go out to Sinmi’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Authorities said they do not suspect foul play at this time. The DuPage County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
The investigation is being led jointly by the Forest Preserve Police and the Naperville Police Department.
