The Anambra State Government, through the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS), has arrested seven suspected illegal revenue collectors operating in different parts of the state.

The suspects were apprehended on Friday at Umueze Anam in Anambra West Local Government Area, Umueri in Anambra East LGA, and along Nkpor–Obosi Road in Idemili North LGA.

Commander of the AIRS Special Squad, Nathan Obikwelu, said the operation followed a tip-off about an incident in Umueri where some individuals allegedly stopped a tricycle transporting 18 cartons of fish and demanded ₦18,000 from the operator.

The suspects were identified as Olisah Monday, Chukwubuike Tony, Nweke Stephen, Nwachukwu Nnamdi, Ugochukwu Umerah, Oluebube Chukwunagolum, and Adakaigbo Onyeka.

Obikwelu explained that the arrests were made at multiple locations where the suspects were reportedly extorting transporters. Others were caught collecting illegal levies at a sand mining site in Umueze Anam, while the last set was intercepted along Nkpor–Obosi Road.

He commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for supporting the agency and praised AIRS Chairman, Dr. Greg Ezeilo, for providing necessary logistics. He also warned illegal revenue collectors to desist, stressing that the agency would continue to arrest and prosecute offenders.

One of the suspects, Nwachukwu Nnamdi, admitted they had been collecting money but claimed they were acting with “legal documents.”

The Anambra State Government reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating illegal revenue collection and ensuring that only authorised persons collect government-approved levies.
