The Lagos State Government on Friday arrested 15 street beggars during an enforcement operation at Ikosi Ketu and Mile 12, as part of ongoing efforts to maintain public order and safeguard public spaces.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the arrests in a statement on his X handle, noting that the operation reflects the state’s resolve to curb street begging and ensure a cleaner, safer environment.

“Fifteen street beggars were apprehended this morning during our enforcement operations at Ikosi Ketu and Mile 12. This is part of our ongoing effort to maintain order, ensure safety, and protect public spaces from misuse,” he said.

Wahab added that the ministry would continue enforcing relevant laws while working with social welfare agencies to provide rehabilitation where needed.

“Lagos must remain safe, clean, and orderly for all who live and work here. Our resolve remains firm,” he stated.

Friday’s operation follows earlier enforcement activities aimed at addressing environmental infractions and the growing challenge of street begging across the state.

A day earlier, operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps arrested eight suspected phone snatchers during a morning raid on the Mile 2 pedestrian bridge. The suspects were swiftly prosecuted and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.

The state government reiterated its commitment to sustaining regular enforcement to enhance public safety and maintain orderliness in Lagos.
