The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State, Lawal Pedro (SAN), has issued a strong warning to Nollywood actor Yomi Fabiyi over what he described as “false, misleading, and irresponsible statements” concerning the release of convicted actor Olanrewaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha.

Fabiyi had claimed in an Instagram post on Friday that Baba Ijesha was freed after being cleared by the Court of Appeal, stating, “I am also happy you were cleared by the APPEAL COURT of ever defiling any child.”

However, in a statement on Sunday, the Attorney General refuted the claim, clarifying that Baba Ijesha’s release was not due to any court overturning his conviction.

Pedro explained that the actor was released solely because he had completed the five-year prison sentence imposed by the Lagos State High Court in 2022 and upheld by the Court of Appeal in 2024.

He further disclosed that Baba Ijesha’s motion seeking leave to file a fresh appeal before the Supreme Court was dismissed by the apex court on October 9, 2025, leaving the earlier conviction fully intact.

“This means that, contrary to misinformation being circulated, Mr. Olanrewaju James was not cleared of committing the offenses of sexual assault and indecent treatment of a child,” the statement read.

The Attorney General warned Fabiyi to desist from spreading falsehoods, adding that he and any media platform that republishes such misinformation may face criminal prosecution under Section 39 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which prohibits the publication of false news with intent to cause fear and alarm to the public.
