A young Nigerian Navy officer, Lt. A.M. Yarima who recently clashed with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike reportedly survived a suspected assassination attempt on Sunday evening.
According to military sources quoted by *Vanguard*, Yarima was trailed by unidentified men dressed in black and riding in two unmarked Hilux vans without number plates. The suspected assailants allegedly followed him from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Line Expressway to Gado Nasco Way around 6:30 p.m.
The officer was said to have noticed the surveillance and executed a “strategic maneuver,” successfully evading the vehicles.
The incident is currently under investigation, with sources stating that “the matter is receiving the seriousness it deserves,” while withholding further details to avoid compromising the ongoing probe.
The development comes days after a widely circulated video showed Lt. Yarima in a tense confrontation with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike at a disputed land site in Gaduwa District. The altercation, which occurred during a joint security operation, sparked nationwide debate and prompted the Presidency to halt the demolition exercise.
Following the incident, military veterans across the country condemned Wike for verbally insulting the officer and warned against any disciplinary action.
Spokesman for the Coalition of Retired Veterans, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, said ex-service members would “occupy the office and residence of the FCT Minister” if Yarima were sanctioned. He maintained that military personnel pledge allegiance to the nation, not to individual public officials.
“How can a public office holder call an officer ‘a fool’ on camera?” he asked, describing Wike’s conduct as disrespectful to national institutions.
Meanwhile, Minister of Defence Mohammad Badaru Abubakar has assured that no military personnel acting lawfully will be punished over the altercation.
“We will always protect officers and our armed forces personnel on lawful duty,” he said during a briefing ahead of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations.
Veterans had earlier vowed to mobilise if Lt. Yarima faced any disciplinary measures.
