Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were shattered on Thursday night after the Super Eagles fell 4-2 to DR Congo in a dramatic penalty shootout, following a tense 1-1 draw in Rabat.

Frank Onyeka handed Nigeria an early breakthrough just three minutes into the match, raising optimism for a positive result. However, DR Congo responded strongly, drawing level in the 32nd minute through Meschak Elia after sustained pressure.

Both teams pushed for a winner in a fiercely contested second half and extra time, but the deadlock persisted despite Nigeria creating several promising chances. The Super Eagles were dealt a further setback when star striker Victor Osimhen hobbled off early in the second half, weakening their attacking threat.

In the ensuing penalty shootout, Nigeria faltered badly. Calvin Bassey missed the opening kick, Semi Ajayi’s effort was saved, and Moses Simon also failed to convert. DR Congo, composed and clinical, scored their kicks to seal a memorable victory and advance to the intercontinental playoff.

The defeat ends Nigeria’s World Cup quest in heartbreaking fashion, leaving fans and players to ponder missed opportunities. DR Congo, meanwhile, march on with their hopes of securing a place at the global showpiece still very much alive.
