Two persons lost their lives while no fewer than 10 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal road accident that occurred on Wednesday along Ikorodu Road, Lagos, opposite Olabode House, between the Anthony and Obanikoro corridors.
Preliminary findings indicated that a red long Tata commercial bus, reportedly speeding from the Palmgroove axis toward Anthony, lost control, broke through the concrete median barrier and collided head-on with an oncoming Volkswagen commercial bus conveying passengers toward Palmgroove.
An adult female passenger was confirmed dead at the scene, while an eight-month-old baby girl later died from injuries sustained in the crash, plunging the area into grief.
Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) promptly responded to the incident and coordinated rescue efforts with members of the public. Ten injured victims, including the drivers of both vehicles, were rescued from the wreckage and conveyed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
LASTMA officials also secured the accident scene, evacuated the damaged vehicles and swiftly restored traffic flow on the busy Ikorodu Road, preventing further congestion and secondary accidents.
The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) transported the injured victims to medical facilities, while officials of the state’s environmental health services evacuated the bodies of the deceased. Police officers from the Ilupeju Division provided security and ensured order during the rescue and recovery operations.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and sympathised with those injured. He cautioned motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, against excessive speeding and poor vehicle maintenance.
Bakare-Oki stressed that reckless driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal road crashes in Lagos and urged road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to prompt emergency response, effective traffic control and the protection of lives and property on Lagos roads.
