2027 ELECTION: KANO POLICE WARN POLITICIANS AGAINST VIOLENCE, THUGGERY

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has cautioned political parties and candidates against violence, hate speech, fake news and other actions capable of disrupting peace ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Bakori issued the warning on Thursday during a strategic meeting with political party leaders and contestants at the Police Command headquarters in Bompai, Kano.

The warning was contained in a statement by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on behalf of the commissioner.

Bakori stressed that maintaining peace in Kano was a collective responsibility, warning that the police would not allow political activities to become a means of violence, intimidation or destruction of property.

He urged political actors to avoid hate speech, misinformation, incitement, thuggery and the use of digital platforms to provoke unrest.

The commissioner also directed political parties and candidates to comply with the Electoral Act 2022 and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission, including obtaining the required permits before organising rallies.

He further called on party leaders to take responsibility for the conduct of their supporters and warned that no political ambition was worth the loss of lives or destruction of property.

An INEC representative also addressed the meeting on electoral guidelines, while representatives of 13 political parties pledged their support for the police command’s peace initiative.

Bakori assured political contestants of a level playing field, adding that the police and other security agencies would provide security at INEC facilities, campaign venues and for candidates.

He disclosed that the command would establish an Election Security Situation Room and Complaint Response Desk to improve its response to emerging threats and electoral complaints.

The commissioner warned that anyone found violating the law or threatening public peace would be arrested and prosecuted, regardless of political affiliation or status.

He urged political leaders and candidates to make peace a priority in their campaigns and work towards ensuring peaceful elections in Kano State.
