LAGOS GOVT, CANADIAN ENVOY PUSH FOR BETTER TOURISM DEVELOPMENT

The Lagos State Government and Canadian Deputy High Commissioner, Carlos Rojas-Arbulú, have called for stronger packaging, promotion and development of tourism attractions across the state to make Lagos more competitive among local and international destinations.
They made the call during a stakeholders’ meeting with representatives from local governments and grassroots communities, tagged “Experience The Best of Lagos.”
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the office of the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, the meeting focused on unlocking the tourism potential of communities across Lagos.

Speaking at the event, Aregbe urged officials at the local government level to take greater responsibility for identifying, developing and promoting tourist attractions within their jurisdictions.
He noted that several valuable tourism destinations remained largely unknown, even to Lagos residents, stressing the need to create a better environment for the growth of the tourism, arts and culture sector.
“My mandate is to ensure that tourism is boosted in Lagos to become the best. We need to continue to create a better environment in the tourism, art, and culture sector,” he said.
Aregbe said the 20 local governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas in the state had a crucial role to play in showcasing Lagos’ tourism assets to a wider audience.
He described council officials as key players in opening up tourism opportunities within their communities and urged them to take ownership of the process.
“You are the keys to the door of tourism in your councils,” he told the stakeholders.
The commissioner also stressed the need for Lagos to convert the growing interest in tourism into sustainable, year-round activities.
He said the 2026 ember season should mark the beginning of a major transformation in Lagos’ tourism sector, with efforts focused on creating memorable experiences that would encourage visitors to extend their stays and return in subsequent seasons.
Rojas-Arbulú, on his part, said Lagos possessed significant tourism assets that could generate economic opportunities if properly packaged and presented to international visitors.
He noted that activities and attractions considered ordinary by residents could offer unique experiences to tourists from other countries.
The Canadian envoy identified value, structure and narrative as key elements required to strengthen Lagos’ tourism offering.
He stressed that tourism attractions must be properly organised, packaged and coordinated, noting that international visitors were more likely to pay for experiences when destinations, transportation and service providers were adequately structured.
