Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has explained his decision to contest the 2027 presidential election alongside Peter Obi, saying their partnership is based on a shared vision for better governance and national development.

Kwankwaso, who is seeking the vice-presidential ticket alongside Obi under the Nigeria Democratic Congress, made this known in a statement on Thursday as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections intensify.

He said Nigeria was facing serious challenges, including rising food prices, unemployment, high business costs and insecurity, which required a different approach to governance.

According to him, insecurity caused by terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violence had continued to disrupt communities, livelihoods and economic activities.

Kwankwaso stressed the need to secure farming communities, protect schools and ensure that Nigerians could live without fear.

He also identified education, healthcare, infrastructure and institutional reforms as areas requiring urgent government intervention, while calling for greater transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.

Explaining his decision to partner with Obi, the former governor said the alliance was not motivated by regional, religious or personal interests but by a common commitment to Nigeria’s progress.

He said the proposed Obi-Kwankwaso ticket was focused on accountable leadership, economic opportunities and an inclusive society where citizens could thrive.

Kwankwaso urged Nigerians, especially youths, women, workers, farmers, entrepreneurs and professionals, to actively participate in the political process and demand competence and accountability from political leaders.

He also called on politicians and their supporters to embrace issue-based campaigns and avoid divisive rhetoric ahead of the 2027 elections.

Kwankwaso described the election as an opportunity for Nigerians to decide the future direction of the country, urging supporters of the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket to conduct their campaigns peacefully and responsibly.
