One person has been confirmed dead following an invasion of hippopotamuses in Guyuk and Shelleng Local Government Areas of Adamawa State, after the animals were displaced by recent flooding around the Kiri Dam.

The Chairman of Guyuk LGA, Mr. Shalom Kassa, disclosed on Monday in the Banjiram community that the victim, a young man, was fatally attacked by one of the hippos.

Kassa said the situation has created widespread panic as the displaced animals now roam freely across communities, farmlands, and riverbanks, threatening lives and livelihoods.

“This is a serious threat to human lives and means of livelihood. The animals are destroying crops, invading flooded homes, and endangering both residents and livestock,” he lamented.

The flooding, which has ravaged several parts of the state, especially in Guyuk and Shelleng, is believed to have forced the hippos out of their natural habitat into populated areas.

Kassa, alongside the Chairman of Shelleng LGA, Alhaji Abubakar Abba, and traditional rulers including the Kwandi Nunguraya of Guyuk, Kuruhaye, visited the state capital Yola to seek urgent government intervention.

He stressed that residents are unable to defend themselves due to wildlife protection laws that prohibit the killing or harming of hippopotamuses.

“We are appealing to the Ministry of Environment, wildlife officials, and relevant agencies to urgently intervene before more lives are lost,” he said.

Kassa also expressed sympathy to victims of recent flooding in Yola town, where five people reportedly died and 55 others were hospitalised.

Responding to the delegation, Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Awwal Tukur, assured them that the government would take immediate action to address both the flooding and the wildlife incursion.
