Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has confirmed that the death toll from the devastating Sunday flood in Yola-South Local Government Area has risen to 23, with several residents still unaccounted for.

Speaking during a visit to the affected communities on Monday, Governor Fintiri expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and assured displaced residents of immediate government support.

At the temporary displacement camp in Yelwa Primary School, the governor met with grieving families and pledged the swift provision of relief materials to alleviate their suffering.

“We will constitute a technical committee to carry out a thorough assessment,” Fintiri said, adding that the committee will work with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to determine the extent of the damage and guide response efforts.

The governor also warned against politicizing the disaster, calling instead for unity in the face of the tragedy.

“This is not a time for politics or finger-pointing. It’s a time for unity and action,” he said.

Governor Fintiri blamed the flooding on a combination of heavy rainfall and poor drainage, citing indiscriminate blockage of waterways by residents as a contributing factor. He vowed that the government would take steps to address structural challenges that worsen the region’s flood vulnerability.
