NBBF PRESIDENT MUSA KIDA STORMS ABIDJAN TO SUPPORT D’TIGRESS AHEAD OF CRUCIAL AFROBASKET QUARTER-FINAL

President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Musa Kida, has arrived in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to rally support for the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, ahead of their highly anticipated quarter-final showdown against Cameroon at the ongoing 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
Kida’s presence in the Ivorian capital, according to a statement by the NBBF on Thursday, reflects the federation’s unwavering commitment to the team as they pursue a historic 27th consecutive AfroBasket victory and a place in the semi-finals.
D’Tigress, the defending champions, are scheduled to face Cameroon at 10pm Nigerian time tonight at the Palais des Sports de Treichville. A win would set up a semi-final clash against either Senegal or host nation Côte d’Ivoire.
So far in the tournament, Nigeria has displayed dominance, defeating Rwanda 92–45 in their opener and overcoming a determined Mozambique side 60–55 to secure their place in the last eight.
Under Musa Kida’s leadership since 2017, D’Tigress have risen to become the undisputed powerhouse of African women’s basketball, clinching four consecutive AfroBasket titles in 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023. The team has also broken new ground on the international stage, most notably reaching the quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where they made history by defeating Canada the first African women’s team to reach that stage of the Olympics.
Tonight’s clash with Cameroon carries emotional and historical weight. Cameroon remains the last team to have defeated Nigeria in the AfroBasket a narrow one-point win in 2015. Since then, D’Tigress have maintained an unbeaten run in the tournament, and victory tonight would further solidify their continental supremacy while moving them closer to a fifth straight title.
Kida’s trip to Abidjan is seen as a morale booster and part of the NBBF’s hands-on approach to national team development and support. The quarter-final presents yet another moment for D’Tigress to underline the strategic depth and planning that have defined their era of dominance in African basketball.
As they prepare to face Cameroon under the weight of expectation and legacy, D’Tigress remain focused on extending their AfroBasket reign and reinforcing their status as Africa’s premier women’s basketball team.
