The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has delivered emergency relief items to the Adamawa State Government for distribution to victims of recent flash floods that claimed 23 lives across several communities.
Speaking on behalf of NEMA Director-General Zubaida Umar during a handover ceremony in Yola on Thursday, the agency’s North-East Zonal Director, Yakubu Suleiman, said the intervention aims to cushion the impact of the disaster on displaced persons.
Suleiman noted that the agency, through its Disaster Response Unit, had played an active role in evacuation and emergency operations during the flood, adding that early precautionary measures helped limit the number of casualties.
The relief materials handed over include food and non-food items such as 500 bags each of 25kg rice and maize, 500 cartons of spaghetti, 50 cartons each of seasoning cubes and tomato paste, 50 kegs of vegetable oil, and 50 bags of iodized salt. Additional supplies included 1,000 plastic cups and spoons, 250 sets of children’s clothing, 200 nylon mats, 200 blankets, and 200 mattresses.
Receiving the items on behalf of the state government, Deputy Governor Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the swift response. She pledged that the materials would be distributed transparently to verified beneficiaries in the affected areas.
Farauta commended President Bola Tinubu for what she described as a fatherly intervention, saying, “We want to say thank you to Mr President for this gesture, and to NEMA for always standing by us in difficult times.”
She further announced that the state government would set up a committee to identify affected households and displaced persons to ensure equitable distribution of the relief materials.
