ONDO POLICE ARREST MAN FOR FAKING OWN KIDNAPPING TO EXTORT FAMILY

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old man, Bello Azeez, for allegedly faking his own kidnapping in a bid to extort money from his family and acquaintances.
In a statement on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, said Azeez, a native of Ipele in Owo Local Government Area, staged the abduction after his father refused to give him N500,000 to settle a debt.
“On August 11, Azeez claimed he was travelling to Ibadan, then began making distress calls to his parents and friends, alleging he had been kidnapped,” Ayanlade explained.
The suspect allegedly directed that the N500,000 ransom, raised through family contributions and a GoFundMe account, be paid directly into his personal bank account. This unusual demand raised suspicion among his relatives, who subsequently alerted the police.
Investigators later tracked Azeez’s phone and discovered he had never left Owo during the period of the supposed abduction. He was arrested and confessed to orchestrating the fake kidnap.
The police said he will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.
“This case underscores the dangers of greed and deceit, which can ruin lives. Parents and guardians are urged to guide their children against crime, peer influence, and moral decadence,” Ayanlade said, adding that members of the public must continue to reject all forms of deception and support law enforcement efforts to ensure peace and security.
