The Lagos State Government has revealed that more than three million residents are expected to take part in the 2025 edition of Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day, a festival dedicated to celebrating Yoruba heritage, culture, and spirituality.
In a statement, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Arts, Culture and Tourism, Hon. Idris Aregbe, described Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day as “a living expression of our traditions and a celebration of Yoruba spirituality as an important part of Nigeria’s cultural and religious landscape.”
He noted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday to mark the occasion, further affirming Lagos’ dedication to preserving indigenous values while promoting inclusivity.
Aregbe added that the huge turnout expected from traditionalists reflects Lagos’ standing as a cultural hub. “This is not just a holiday, it is an opportunity for millions of Lagosians to reconnect with their roots, appreciate ancestral heritage, and experience the beauty of our cultural practices that continue to shape our identity as a people,” he said.
The 2025 celebrations will include prayers, rituals, processions, and cultural activities in honour of the Òrìṣà (deities). With government offices, schools, and many businesses closing for the day, residents will have the opportunity to fully participate.
The state government also urged participants to celebrate in a peaceful and respectful manner, ensuring that the festival remains a symbol of unity.
“With three million voices coming together in honour of tradition, Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day goes beyond festivities. It is history, faith, and cultural pride expressed in harmony. Lagos remains a beacon of unity, where every heritage finds its place,” Aregbe concluded.
