The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, has sympathised with a female corps member, Jennifer Elohor, who was brutally assaulted by operatives of the Udo-ga-chi vigilance group in Idemili South Local Government Area.

Speaking to journalists in Awka on Wednesday, Mrs Soludo said she personally contacted Elohor to express concern over the “cruel and humiliating” treatment captured in a viral video.

“I have called her and sympathised with her over the unfortunate incident and also invited her to the New Government House for a meeting to comfort her and ensure she is not traumatised,” she said.

The governor’s wife added that Elohor, who is currently outside Anambra State, assured her she would reach out upon return.

Meanwhile, the state government has dismissed eight operatives of the Udo-ga-chi vigilante group for their involvement in the assault. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, announced the action on Wednesday at the Agunechemba Security headquarters in Awka.

Emeakayi said the dismissed operatives would be handed over to the police for immediate prosecution, stressing that the government acted swiftly to address the disturbing incident.

Civil society organisations and human rights groups have strongly condemned the assault, with many calling for the disbandment of the vigilante outfit.
