A violent confrontation in the Mandilas area of Lagos Island on Wednesday left one person dead following a stabbing incident at Balogun Market.

The Lagos State Police Command, through its spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified in a statement that the incident was not a tribal clash or ethnic conflict, as speculated in some quarters.

According to the police, the fight broke out around 11 a.m. between two men identified as Ebuka Adindu from Abia State and Sodiq Ibrahim from Kogi State. During the altercation, Adindu fatally stabbed Ibrahim and subsequently stabbed himself in the shoulder, rendering himself unconscious. He was immediately taken into custody at a hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment under police guard.

“The Command wishes to inform the general public that there was no tribal clash or disturbance between any ethnic groups inside Balogun Market today,” the statement read. “There was an incident of a free-for-all fight between some hoodlums and miscreants… one person was killed, and the suspect is now under arrest.”

Eyewitnesses reported that the fight stemmed from a dispute over the sharing of money from a recent job. Bystanders restrained the attacker before handing him over to the authorities.

Police confirmed that no innocent lives were lost, no other injuries occurred, and no goods or property were damaged during the incident. Normalcy has since been restored, with traders and residents urged to go about their activities without fear.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, appealed to Lagosians to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies to sustain peace, stressing that the state remains generally peaceful.

The suspect will be prosecuted upon his recovery, police said.
