TARABA VARSITY ASUU TELLS FG: GIVE US OUR ENTITLEMENTS, NOT LOANS

BY OWOLABI OLUWADARA
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), branch of the Federal University Wukari (FUW), has demanded the prompt disbursement of their accrued entitlements, rejecting the Federal Government’s proposed loan initiative.
The demand was articulated during a demonstration organized by the union to convey dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to honor long-standing agreements.
Leading the protest, ASUU FUW Chairperson, Professor Asabe Mercy, asserted that educators merit enhanced compensation and improved welfare, rather than indebtedness.

She cautioned that citizens should hold the government accountable if universities are shut down once more, reiterating that ASUU will not hesitate to engage in renewed confrontation.
According to her statement, the union is insisting on the payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), pointing out that the recently allocated ₦50 billion accounts for less than 10 percent of the total amount owed.
The union also highlighted the lack of revitalization funds and substandard working conditions as contributing factors for the demonstration.
Reflecting these sentiments, former ASUU Chairman, Professor Kidzu Oweh, denounced the inadequate remuneration of lecturers.
He questioned how a professor is expected to sustain a livelihood on ₦300,000 per month while politicians are poised to receive salary increases.
Professor Oweh affirmed that ASUU would persist in its campaign until the government fulfills its commitments, underscoring that the education sector cannot prosper under neglect and superficial measures.
