Former presidential aspirant of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has criticized the deteriorating state of security in the nation, asserting that abductions and killings have become a daily occurrence for Nigerians.

Obi, in a statement disseminated on X on Wednesday, responded to the kidnapping of 44 worshippers from a mosque in Zamfara State, cautioning that the normalization of violence is undermining the country’s dignity.

“Insecurity has become a commonplace experience in Nigeria,” he remarked. “While news headlines continue to celebrate a supposed peace agreement in Katsina, we are once again faced with the tragic reality that 55 of our fellow citizens were kidnapped in neighboring Zamfara State. ”

The former governor of Anambra expressed regret that behind the statistics of the abducted or deceased are human lives and devastated families.

He stated, “Behind every statistic are families shattered, aspirations curtailed, and futures snatched away.

“A nation cannot develop or thrive when its citizens exist in persistent fear. It appears as though the lives of Nigerians hold little value. What significance does the life of a single Nigerian possess when hundreds are kidnapped and murdered daily without a national response to insecurity? If the lives of many are treated with indifference, how can the life of one Nigerian be esteemed? ”

He criticized what he characterized as governmental inaction amid ongoing bloodshed, emphasizing that the primary responsibility of leadership is the safeguarding of life.

“When a government remains quiet in the face of continuous violence, it undermines the dignity of each citizen. The fundamental duty of leadership is to ensure the protection of life,” Obi asserted.

Urging immediate intervention, he concluded: “We must swiftly prioritize the protection of lives and property. Our citizens deserve a nation where peace is not merely an option but the norm. Nigerians will not resign to insecurity as their destiny. ”
