President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to two distinguished Nigerians, Farouk Gumel and Tobi Amusan, for their recent accomplishments on the international platform.
In a communiqué released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Nigerian leader characterized their achievements as a reason for national pride.
PUNCH Online reports that Gumel has recently been appointed Chairman of the Botswana Sovereign Wealth Fund Limited, a role the President indicated underscores both his personal proficiency and the high regard in which Nigerian professionals are held worldwide.
The President lauded Gumel’s impressive history, particularly in his capacity as Vice Chairman for Africa at the Tropical General Investment Group, where he has made substantial contributions to Nigeria’s food security initiatives.
“His leadership in this crucial capacity brings significant pride to our nation, and I am confident that he will thrive and further enhance Nigeria’s reputation for excellence in global finance,” Tinubu remarked.

Also recognized was Nigerian sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan, who secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles on Monday at the 2025 World Athletics Championships held in Tokyo, Japan. The President praised Amusan’s “unrelenting determination, tenacity, and steadfast spirit,” emphasizing that her performance yet again illustrates the heights Nigerians can achieve through diligence and commitment.
“Tobi has once more shown that with patriotic zeal, combined with perseverance and resolve, any summit can be reached.
“Her accomplishment is a point of national pride,” the President stated.
Tinubu wished both Gumel and Amusan ongoing success in their respective fields and assured them of the government’s unwavering support.
Gumel presently holds the position of Vice Chairman for Africa at the Tropical General Investment Group, a conglomerate with a substantial presence in agribusiness, finance, and manufacturing. Over the years, he has been instrumental in promoting Nigeria’s food sufficiency agenda and bolstering regional economic collaboration. He is also a former Senior Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he delivered strategic advisory services across Africa. His recent appointment marks a notable milestone in international finance and governance.
Meanwhile, Amusan, who made history in 2022 by becoming the first Nigerian to secure a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships, continues to lead in global track and field. She is the current world record holder in the 100m hurdles, having recorded a remarkable time of 12.12 seconds at the 2022 championships in Oregon, USA. Her latest medal adds to an expanding list of accolades, including gold medals from the African Championships, Commonwealth Games, and Diamond League titles.
