ASUU TO FG: STOP CREATING NEW UNIVERSITIES, FIX EXISTING ONES
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has urged the Federal Government to halt the establishment of new universities and instead focus on revitalising existing institutions across the country.
The union made the call in reaction to the Federal Government’s recent approval of a seven-year moratorium on the creation of new universities. ASUU said the decision was long overdue, stressing that Nigeria’s existing public universities are already overstretched and underfunded.
According to the union, the continuous approval of new institutions without corresponding investment in infrastructure, staffing and learning facilities has weakened the quality of higher education. It argued that many universities currently operate below acceptable standards due to poor funding and neglect.
ASUU maintained that rather than expanding the number of tertiary institutions, the government should prioritise the rehabilitation of dilapidated structures, provision of modern equipment, improved staffing levels and the implementation of previously signed agreements aimed at revitalising the sector.
The union insisted that meaningful reform in the education sector must begin with strengthening the capacity of existing universities to deliver quality teaching, research and innovation.
