A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room in Ekpoma after allegedly engaging the services of a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
It was gathered that Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob, before he reportedly became unresponsive and died.
The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying three persons had been arrested in connection with the case.
Ikoedem said the command received a report at about 8pm on October 5, 2026, that the lecturer had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman.
According to her, Uwuigbe subsequently sent the woman to purchase water, but she returned to find him lying dead in the room.
The police spokesperson said the hotel owner, manager and the woman were in custody as investigations continued.
She added that the lecturer’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary for further examination.
Meanwhile, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of the institution.
Aladenika, however, stressed that the incident occurred outside the university premises and involved the lecturer’s private life.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
The police are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death as the investigation continues.
