The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, a “prisoner of conscience” and called for his immediate release.

The opposition party made the declaration during its 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Saturday.

In a resolution issued at the meeting, the ADC urged relevant authorities to release El-Rufai without delay, describing his situation as one that warrants urgent attention.

“We recognise former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, as a prisoner of conscience. We are therefore calling on the authorities to release him without delay,” the party stated.

The NEC also approved a 12-month extension of the tenure of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) from the expiration of its current mandate.

In addition, the party endorsed the constitution of caretaker committees at the zonal, state, local government and ward levels for a period of 12 months as part of efforts to strengthen its internal structures ahead of future political activities.

The resolutions formed part of key decisions reached at the NEC meeting as the party reviewed its organisational affairs and political direction.
