AFCON 2025: GHANAIAN REFEREE’S INSTAGRAM PAGE REMOVED FOLLOWING NIGERIA’S LOSS TO MOROCCO

The Instagram page of Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Laryea has reportedly been taken down.
This follows widespread criticism over his officiating during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final between Nigeria and Morocco, which many observers described as controversial.
Concerns had been raised about his nationality ahead of the match, given the intense football rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria.
Nii Laryea’s decisions did little to ease these fears, including issuing a yellow card to Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey, which led to a one-match suspension.

Angry Nigerian fans reportedly located the referee’s social media accounts on Instagram and Twitter and mass-reported them. Checks confirm that his Instagram page has since been taken down.
“The referee was appalling,” Nigeria defender Bright Osayi-Samuel said in the mixed zone. “I’m not saying that’s the reason why we lost, but he was making very, very wrong decisions. It’s really painful to see that we have referees like that in a game like today.”
