ALMOST 12 HOURS IN KARA: COMMUTER DOCUMENTS GRUELLING ORDEAL AS LAGOS-IBADAN EXPRESSWAY GRIDLOCK PERSISTS

A commuter has documented his nearly 12-hour ordeal in the gridlock around Kara Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, sharing videos that capture the severity of the traffic congestion from daylight into the night.
The commuter, identified on X as @faruq2011, took to the platform to share his experience after spending almost 12 hours caught in the gridlock.
Videos shared by Faruq showed rows of vehicles trapped in the traffic, with little movement as the congestion persisted for hours.
One of the videos captured the situation at night, while another showed the traffic during the early hours of the day, highlighting the length of time commuters were forced to remain on the road.
Another video filmed during the day shows motorists virtually at a standstill, with vehicles occupying the available road space around the Kara axis.
Faruq has since made it out of the gridlock after what turned into an almost 12-hour journey through the affected corridor.
His experience comes amid the worsening traffic situation on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway following a multiple-vehicle crash at Kara Bridge, which compounded the disruption caused by ongoing rehabilitation works on the bridge.
The crash, involving a 40-foot container truck and six other vehicles, reportedly resulted in severe congestion along the busy corridor, with motorists and commuters spending several hours on the road.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said its LRT Tiger Squad stationed at C3 was dispatched to the scene at 6:05am following a distress call and arrived within the projected response time.
According to the LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the vehicles involved were a 40-foot container truck without a registration number, a Toyota Hilux, an interstate bus, a Hyundai Odyssey, a Sienna, a Toyota Highlander and a Mitsubishi Hilux.
He said preliminary investigation showed that the container truck developed a mechanical fault while in motion, causing the driver to lose control and ram into the other six vehicles.
The incident has renewed attention on the difficulties faced by commuters using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, particularly around the Kara axis, a major route connecting Lagos with Ogun State and other parts of the country.
For Faruq, the videos shared online offer a firsthand account of what it was like to remain caught in the gridlock from nightfall into dawn before finally getting out of the traffic.
His experience also reflects the wider frustration of commuters who rely on the busy corridor and have been forced to endure unusually long travel times as traffic continues to build around the Kara axis.
