BREAKING: VETERAN ACTOR OLU JACOBS DIES AT 84

Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

Jacobs’ death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in an Instagram post on Wednesday.

Announcing the death, Olusoji described the late actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” and said the family was grateful to God for his life.

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” he wrote.

He also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect the privacy of the family as they mourn the veteran actor.

Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most celebrated actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film.

Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and began his acting career in British television before featuring in international productions.

He later returned to Nigeria and became a major figure in the country’s film industry, starring in numerous Nigerian films and earning recognition for his commanding performances.

Over the course of his career, Jacobs received several industry honours, including the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival.

Beyond acting, Jacobs was also involved in film production and the development of performing arts in Nigeria. He co-founded the Lufodo Group with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, contributing to theatre, film and arts education in the country.

His death marks the end of an era for a generation of Nigerian actors whose work helped shape the country’s modern film and theatre industry.

Jacobs, who turned 84 in July 2026, is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, and their family.
