ANAMBRA POLICE ARREST TWO OVER ALLEGED PRODUCTION OF FAKE ALCOHOLIC DRINKS

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects allegedly involved in the production and distribution of adulterated alcoholic beverages across the state.
The suspects, identified as Ikechukwu Okeke, 42, and Okeke Chukwuemeka, 38, were apprehended in the early hours of Monday by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad/Anti-Violence Crime Response Unit following actionable intelligence.
Confirming the arrest in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspects are currently in custody while recovered exhibits have been preserved for forensic analysis and use as evidence.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects belong to a syndicate allegedly engaged in the adulteration and counterfeiting of popular alcoholic beverage brands.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to the operation and subsequently led investigators to a mini-factory allegedly used for the illegal production activities.
Items recovered from the location include suspected counterfeit bottles of Seaman’s Schnapps, McDowell’s, Eagle Schnapps, Elliot Hot Drinks and Baileys Fresh Cream.
Police also recovered substances described as dangerous chemicals allegedly used in the production process, alongside large quantities of empty bottles, labels and packaging materials intended for continued manufacture and distribution.
Ikenga stated that the exhibits have been secured while investigations continue.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the operatives for the successful operation and warned individuals involved in producing and distributing counterfeit consumable products to desist or face legal consequences.
He added that ongoing investigations are aimed at identifying and arresting other members of the syndicate and determining the full scale of the operation.
