George Agbakahi, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that the party is open to the possibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan running in the 2027 presidential election.

Agbakahi, who also leads the South East Tinubu Support Group, made the comment during an appearance on the media Morning Show on Friday.

“I’ve said it before politics is very dynamic. We’re still about a year and a half away from the election, and we already know that three or four major political parties will be in the race,” he said.

“President Jonathan is a good man—he’s welcome to return to the PDP and contest. The APC is ready. Peter Obi is also a very good man—he can contest under the Labour Party or ADC. The same applies to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar,” Agbakahi stated.

He emphasized that while the All Progressives Congress (APC) stands firmly behind President Bola Tinubu’s administration and its achievements, the party is open to a competitive electoral process.

“The APC is prepared, but it’s important to remember that in politics, track record matters. President Tinubu, as the current commander-in-chief, has done a lot to improve the lives of Nigerians,” he said.

Agbakahi also noted that many variables will shape the 2027 general elections and added that it’s still uncertain which platforms the key contenders will ultimately choose. However, he expressed confidence in the APC’s strength and preparedness.

That’s why I say it’s still too early to predict. Will President Jonathan return to the PDP or consider the ADC? Will Peter Obi run under the Labour Party again, or switch to the ADC? The same uncertainty applies to Atiku Abubakar,” Agbakahi said.

Speaking further, he noted, “As a political analyst, I believe that within the ADC, it’s unlikely any other presidential hopeful could take the candidacy from Atiku Abubakar. The ADC is practically his political base, and I expect him to emerge as its presidential candidate. As for Peter Obi, it’s likely he’ll remain with the Labour Party. Ultimately, the more candidates, the better.”

He concluded by reaffirming the APC’s readiness for the 2027 elections: “We want Jonathan to contest. We want Peter Obi to contest. We want Atiku to contest. The APC is solid and well-positioned.”
