An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Bala Wakili, has been killed during a gun battle with suspected bandits in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

Wakili, who was attached to the Kebbe Police Division, reportedly died while leading an operation to repel armed attackers who invaded two communities in the area.

According to reports, the suspected bandits attacked Girkau and Zugu villages at about 4 p.m. on Monday and rustled an unspecified number of livestock.

A source said security operatives confronted the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire, but the bandits, who were reportedly larger in number, overpowered the security team.

The source added that the attackers killed ASP Wakili and set two patrol vehicles ablaze—one belonging to the Nigeria Police Force and the other to the Sokoto Community Guard Corps.
