ASUU STRIKE: LECTURERS SHUT DOWN ACTIVITIES IN PLATEAU, EDO, ONDO, OTHERS

Academic activities have been disrupted in several state-owned universities following the commencement of industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the non-implementation of key provisions of the 2009 re-negotiated agreement.
Checks on Wednesday showed that lecturers in several affected institutions complied with the directive from ASUU’s national leadership by withdrawing their services.
Among the affected universities are Nasarawa State University, Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida University, Gombe State University, Plateau State University, Kaduna State University, Kano State University of Science and Technology, Northwest University and Taraba State University.
Others include the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo; Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko; Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology; Emmanuel Alayande University of Education; Abia State University; Enugu State University of Science and Technology; Imo State University; Niger Delta University; University of Africa, Toru-Orua; and Bayelsa Medical University.

At Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, the ASUU branch said it would sustain the strike until the Ondo State Government begins implementing the agreement and pays outstanding arrears dating back to January 2026.
The branch chairman, Prof. Bolu Oshodi, said the union was demanding implementation of the new salary structure, which took effect in January 2026.
He explained that the branch would only suspend the strike after members receive payment of the implementation and outstanding arrears in their bank accounts.
At Plateau State University, Bokkos, ASUU declared a total and indefinite strike over the university management’s failure to resolve its six-point list of demands.
The demands include implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme, full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, payment of arrears from January 1, 2026, provision of secure staff quarters and improved security infrastructure around the university.
The union also demanded an end to alleged intimidation of its leaders and payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25/35 per cent wage award.
Academic activities were similarly disrupted at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, where ASUU members commenced an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the agreement reached with the Federal Government.
The union cited the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and failure to pay accrued allowance arrears from January 2026.
According to the branch, the strike followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university authorities and Edo State Government.
The industrial action covers teaching and lecturing, examinations, statutory meetings, supervision of students’ research projects, Industrial Training and Teaching Practice, among other services.
ASUU branches across the affected institutions have maintained that the strike will continue until the outstanding agreements and financial obligations are implemented.
