The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, attracted a crowd on Saturday after stopping at a filling station to refuel their vehicle.
The unexpected appearance of the two politicians drew the attention of people at the station, who gathered around their vehicle for an impromptu interaction.
A video circulating on social media showed Amaechi behind the steering wheel, with Atiku seated in the front passenger seat.
As the crowd gathered, some people called on Amaechi to step out and greet them. The interaction subsequently shifted to Atiku’s campaign promise to restore the fuel subsidy.
Responding to the concerns, Amaechi said an ADC-led administration would work towards reducing petrol prices by lowering the cost of production.
“We will reduce the cost of producing fuel. We will bring down the production cost, and this will make the price of petrol come down,” Amaechi said.
Atiku later stepped out of the vehicle and waved at the crowd, drawing cheers from supporters.
When the issue of fuel subsidy restoration was raised, the former vice president responded in Hausa, saying, “Zan dawo da tallafi insha Allahu,” meaning, “I will bring back the fuel subsidy, by God’s grace.”
The brief encounter ended when Amaechi returned to the vehicle and drove off with Atiku.
