AUTHORITIES ARREST 22-YEAR-OLD ACCUSED OF IMPERSONATING A POLICE OFFICER IN LAGOS

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 22-year-old man, Onipede Ojo, for allegedly impersonating a police officer after reportedly stealing a police bag containing official documents and personal belongings.
Police said the stolen items included a camouflage uniform, warrant card, mobile phone, ATM card, and other valuables belonging to a serving officer. Authorities alleged that Ojo used the uniform and other materials to present himself as a legitimate police operative.
In a video circulating on X, the suspect claimed he found the police uniform, bearing the name tag of Inspector Jimoh Weheed, along Maryland Road in Lagos.
According to the police, residents became suspicious after noticing inconsistencies in the suspect’s appearance and conduct. Their concerns prompted them to question him, leading to the discovery that he was allegedly impersonating a police officer.
The suspect was subsequently apprehended and handed over to law enforcement authorities for further investigation.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that Ojo remains in custody and will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The command praised members of the public for their vigilance and civic responsibility, which contributed to the suspect’s arrest.
However, the police strongly condemned acts of jungle justice, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands regardless of the alleged offence. The command stressed that Lagos State laws do not permit extrajudicial punishment and urged the public to hand over suspects to the appropriate authorities for proper investigation and prosecution.
The police also encouraged residents to remain security-conscious and continue supporting security agencies by reporting suspicious individuals, activities, and movements while allowing due process to take its course.
