Avi-Cenna International School and Grange School, both in Lagos, have suspended in-person academic activities after receiving a threat of an explosion.

Avi-Cenna’s management, in a letter signed by Paul Olubajo and addressed to parents and guardians, said the school had received a threat via text message. The school immediately contacted the police, and a special unit was deployed to assess the premises.

“After a thorough assessment, the police confirmed that the premises are safe. However, the school will remain closed for today,” the letter stated. “We continue to strive to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and parents and will provide updates as they become available.”

Similarly, Grange School announced a temporary closure on Thursday, citing the need to act responsibly despite there being no immediate danger. Richard McMahon, the school head, said online classes would continue for students during the closure.

“While there is no immediate danger, we have taken all necessary precautions and are coordinating with authorities to ensure the safety of our school community,” the statement read.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the threat has been neutralised. In a statement by spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi, the command said a response team led by Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh—including Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD-CBRN) and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS)—conducted a full sweep of the schools, including classrooms, administrative offices, halls, and playgrounds.

“The assessment ruled out the presence of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) or any other hazardous materials,” the police said.

The commissioner also ordered an investigation to trace, identify, and apprehend the individual(s) responsible for sending the threat.
