The Baale of Yawota Community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has said that families of abducted pupils, students, and teachers rejected rice and cash brought by government representatives who visited to sympathise with them after the attack.
Speaking on the incident, the traditional ruler explained that the affected families insisted their only demand was the safe return of their loved ones, not material support.
He said armed bandits invaded the community, shooting sporadically while abducting schoolchildren and teachers.
According to him, the attackers whisked away several children during the assault, which caused panic across the area. He added that community leaders promptly reported the incident to the Nigeria Police Force, who responded swiftly and assessed the situation.
The Baale noted that government officials later visited the community with rice and cash assistance, but the gesture was declined by the victims’ families.
He further revealed that a delegation of women sent by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, also came with relief materials and financial support, but the families maintained their stance, insisting on the release of the abducted victims.
The community leader said the attack, which occurred on May 16 along the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis, affected pupils and teachers from several schools, heightening fears over insecurity in the area.
