Bandits have reportedly released a video featuring former Nigerian Army spokesperson, Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd.), and his wife after their alleged abduction.

The footage was shared on Saturday by journalist Bakatsine in a post on X. The journalist, known for tracking insecurity in northwestern Nigeria, expressed concern over the demands reportedly made by the kidnappers.

According to the post, the abductors are seeking the release of some of their detained associates as part of negotiations for the couple’s freedom.

Bakatsine warned that conceding to such demands could have wider security implications, arguing that prisoner exchanges may encourage further kidnappings and strengthen criminal networks.

“This is the video released by bandits of former Nigerian Army spokesperson Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife following their abduction,” he wrote.

“We hope for their safe and swift release. However, the abductors’ demands are equally alarming, particularly their reported call for the release of detained associates.

“If authorities agree to such exchanges, are we not reinforcing a cycle that could embolden bandits and endanger even more communities across the country in the long term?”
