Barcelona’s wage planning will determine when the club can implement the salary increase already agreed for winger Lamine Yamal, according to MARCA.

The report said the improvement was included in Yamal’s contract renewal in 2025, meaning the issue is not a fresh negotiation but when the club can activate the agreed terms.

Barcelona intends to honour the agreement, which is linked to the two-year anniversary of Yamal’s renewal in 2027. However, the club has yet to decide on a specific date for the salary increase.

Yamal extended his contract with Barcelona at the end of May 2025 and is tied to the Catalan club until June 2031.

The club’s squad-cost limit currently stands at €582 million, while its expenses are already close to that figure at around €581 million, leaving little room for an immediate increase in Yamal’s salary.

Barcelona executives expect the club’s wage costs to rise to approximately €636 million this season. However, the projection does not mean Yamal’s agreed raise can be implemented immediately, with the club maintaining that the timing must be carefully managed within its financial structure.

Under his current contract, Yamal is reportedly Barcelona’s highest-paid player. MARCA estimates that his total earnings could eventually exceed €20 million net when his fixed salary, performance targets, signing bonus, additional bonuses and a possible Ballon d’Or-related component are taken into account.

The 19-year-old has made 159 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 57 goals and providing 58 assists.

Rodri is reportedly among the players closest to Yamal in terms of earnings, while Raphinha is expected to move closer to that bracket if his proposed renewal is completed. Frenkie de Jong, Jules Koundé and Marc-Andre ter Stegen are also among Barcelona’s better-paid players.

Before implementing Yamal’s salary improvement, Barcelona must deal with several other contract matters, including those involving Raphinha, Xavi Espart and Marc Bernal.

The club’s wider renewal strategy will determine the order in which those agreements are addressed, with Bernal’s contract identified as one of the priorities.

Despite the delay, Barcelona has not backed away from its commitment to Yamal. The club’s plan remains to implement the salary increase at a later date when its financial situation allows.

MARCA also noted that the original projection for Yamal’s improved earnings could be reassessed by the time the increase takes effect, particularly if the young forward wins the Ballon d’Or.
