The United States crashed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a 4-1 defeat to the Belgium national football team in their Round of 16 clash at Lumen Field in Seattle.

Belgium made a strong start and took the lead in the eighth minute through Charles De Ketelaere after the Americans failed to clear their lines. The Europeans continued to dominate possession and chances in the opening stages.

The United States briefly restored parity in the 31st minute when Malik Tillman converted a free-kick that deflected into the net. However, the celebration was short-lived as Belgium regained the lead just two minutes later, with De Ketelaere heading home his second goal of the match.

Trailing 2-1 at halftime, the Americans struggled to create meaningful opportunities after the break. Their problems worsened in the 57th minute when goalkeeper Matt Freese lost possession while attempting to clear the ball, allowing Belgium to capitalise as Hans Vanaken extended the lead to 3-1.

The United States also suffered an injury setback when captain Christian Pulisic was forced off in the second half and replaced by Sebastian Berhalter.

Despite late efforts from the Americans, Belgium remained in control. Substitute Romelu Lukaku sealed the victory in stoppage time, scoring Belgium’s fourth goal to put the result beyond doubt.

The defeat ended the United States’ hopes of reaching the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2002, while Belgium progressed to the last eight, where they will face the Spain national football team.
