Jorge Messi, father and longtime adviser to Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68, according to multiple media reports in Argentina. Reports said he had been battling health problems for some time.

The news comes weeks after Lionel Messi became emotional following his goal for Argentina against Algeria at the World Cup. After the match, the Inter Miami forward explained that his tears had nothing to do with football and that he had experienced “a few difficult days.”

His comments sparked speculation that his father’s health was behind his emotional reaction. Reports subsequently linked his remarks to Jorge Messi’s condition, although details about his illness remained unclear.

The Messi family later issued a statement confirming that Jorge was experiencing health problems and was receiving medical treatment.

The family also appealed for privacy, expressing concern over reports and speculation surrounding what it described as a private family matter.

“We sincerely appreciate the expressions of affection, respect and concern we have received and ask that the privacy, confidentiality and personal space of Jorge — and that of his entire family — be respected throughout this process,” the family said at the time.

Lionel Messi’s concern for his father was also evident at the end of July when he missed the Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star Game. He was later reported to have returned to action for Inter Miami after spending time away from the team.

Jorge Messi played a significant role in his son’s career, serving as his agent and helping manage his business affairs. His influence remained an important part of Lionel Messi’s professional journey from his early years to becoming one of football’s most decorated players.

News of Jorge Messi’s death has since prompted tributes from football fans and figures around the sport as the Messi family mourns his passing.
