The Nigeria Police Force has invited social media critic Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, to provide evidence supporting allegations he made against police officers during the Nigerian Bar Association conference in Port Harcourt.
VeryDarkMan made the claims on Tuesday while participating as a panelist at the 66th Annual General Conference of the NBA, where he accused some police officers of sharing information about travellers with kidnappers and bandits.
He alleged that officers stationed at checkpoints along major highways identify wealthy travellers and pass details of their identities and movements to criminal groups, thereby aiding kidnappers in carrying out ransom abductions.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, dismissed the allegations and maintained that officers deployed to checkpoints nationwide are tasked with preventing crime, detecting criminal activities and protecting citizens.
The police noted that its personnel regularly confront the same criminal elements allegedly receiving such information.
The Force subsequently invited VeryDarkMan to produce evidence backing his claims, particularly any proof that police officers identify wealthy individuals and transmit their details to kidnappers to facilitate abductions.
The police said any evidence provided would be treated with urgency and thoroughly investigated, while urging members of the public with credible information about police misconduct to report through official channels.
