Carlos Queiroz has left his position as head coach of Ghana following the Black Stars’ damaging 4-2 defeat to Gambia in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced on Thursday that it had mutually agreed with the veteran Portuguese coach to terminate his contract, barely a month after reappointing him for a fresh mandate.

In a farewell message published on the GFA’s website, Queiroz said the decision was made in the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and the country’s football.

“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” he said.

Queiroz added that the “necessary conditions were not fully established” and that the team’s recent performance contributed to the decision to end his tenure.

The Portuguese coach’s departure came after Ghana surrendered a two-goal lead to suffer a 4-2 home defeat to Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan had given the Black Stars a commanding advantage before Gambia scored four unanswered goals to complete a remarkable comeback.

The result followed Ghana’s 2-0 defeat away to Ivory Coast, leaving the four-time African champions bottom of Group C without a point after two matches.

Queiroz departs with a record of one win, two draws and four defeats in seven matches. During that period, Ghana scored five goals and conceded 10.

His exit ends a turbulent five-month spell with the Black Stars. The 73-year-old initially took charge in April on a four-month contract aimed at guiding Ghana through the 2026 World Cup.

Queiroz led Ghana to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time since 2010, following a victory over Panama and a draw with England.

The Black Stars were subsequently eliminated by Colombia, who secured a 1-0 victory in the Round of 32.

Although his initial contract ended after the tournament, the GFA reappointed Queiroz on September 2.

His latest departure leaves the association searching for another coach as Ghana face an early challenge in their bid to qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations.

With only the top two teams from each four-team qualifying group advancing, Ghana are already six points behind Ivory Coast and Gambia after two matches and face a difficult task in their attempt to avoid missing a second consecutive AFCON tournament.
