‘DSS CAME TO MY HOUSE IN 2021, HERE’S HOW I ESCAPED’ — SUNDAY IGBOHO

Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has recounted how he escaped arrest by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) during the agency’s controversial raid on his Ibadan residence in July 2021.
Igboho claimed that despite surrounding his home, the security operatives were unable to apprehend him, alleging that they mistook a cat for him and brought in what he described as a “fake herbalist” to perform rituals during the operation.
The activist made the claims on Monday while receiving Muslim delegations at his residence in Ibadan, where he narrated his experience during the raid.
According to Igboho, he remained inside the house throughout the operation but was not discovered by the operatives.
He recalled that the DSS operatives arrived around 1:30 a.m. and began shooting after hearing his voice from inside the house. He said they later forced their way in by using explosives on the burglary, causing significant damage.
Igboho said he was initially torn between surrendering and trying to escape, fearing that he could be killed if he gave himself up.
He alleged that the operatives demanded that he open the door and pointed guns at his personal assistant, Dudu, who pleaded with him to cooperate. Igboho said the incident made him suspect that the operation was aimed at harming him.
Addressing reports that he transformed into a cat to evade arrest, Igboho dismissed the claim, saying the animal was killed after being mistaken for him.
He also alleged that the security operatives brought a herbalist who performed rituals while searching for him, adding that he watched the operation unfold without being detected.
Igboho further claimed that a partially blind relative who came outside during the raid was shot by the operatives, who allegedly mistook him for a threat.
He attributed his escape to divine intervention, saying prayers by Muslim clerics who visited his home helped prevent what he described as a bad outcome.
The DSS had invaded Igboho’s Soka residence in Ibadan, Oyo State, on July 1, 2021, following rising tensions between the activist and the Federal Government under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Before the raid, Igboho had gained national attention after issuing an ultimatum to some Fulani residents in parts of Oyo State over allegations of insecurity and criminal activities.
He later intensified his campaign for the creation of a sovereign Yoruba Nation, a movement the Federal Government described as a security concern.
Following the operation, the DSS announced that it recovered arms and ammunition from the residence and arrested 13 of Igboho’s associates. The agency also said two of his aides were killed during an exchange of gunfire.
After the raid, Igboho fled Nigeria and was later arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic, while attempting to travel to Germany. He was eventually released after months of legal proceedings and has remained in Benin Republic, where he has continued his advocacy for Yoruba self-determination.
