The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Wednesday directed aviation authorities to place 46 people who had contact with an Ebola-infected individual on a no-fly list for 21 days as part of measures to prevent the potential spread of the virus.

Keyamo also ordered the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to strengthen Ebola surveillance and response measures at all international airports across the country.

He disclosed this in a post on X, formerly Twitter, following a virtual meeting with the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, to discuss the Ebola outbreak.

According to the minister, Pate provided a list of 44 people who had contact with the affected individual at a hospital after she developed symptoms, as well as two domestic staff members.

Keyamo said efforts were underway to isolate the contacts pending confirmation that they had not contracted the virus.

He explained that the 21-day restriction was intended to cover the period within which Ebola symptoms are generally expected to appear.

“I have therefore directed the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, to immediately inform all local and international airlines of this development,” the minister stated.

He added that FAAN had been directed to intensify surveillance and implement additional preventive measures at international airports.

According to Keyamo, the measures already being implemented include enhanced health screening, temperature checks, tracking of travellers’ movement histories, digital health declarations and stricter coordination among relevant agencies.

He said FAAN was working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), following regional outbreak alerts, to strengthen the country’s preparedness and prevent the possible spread of the virus.
