The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a medical doctor following the death of a woman during surgery at a private hospital in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, said on Friday that detectives are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident.

The doctor, identified as Festus Ogheghele of Dickson Medical Centre, Uromi, reportedly performed a caesarean section on the late Susan Omoye-Okporan, 36, on August 2, 2025. While the baby survived, the mother allegedly developed complications shortly after the procedure and died.

Her family has accused the doctor of gross professional negligence and vowed to pursue the matter until justice is served.

“I am sure the doctor was careless. Performing a caesarean section is one of the easiest surgical operations due to advancement in technology. The family is ready to pursue the case to the highest level,” a family said.

Investigations revealed that operatives from the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Benin, took over the case from Uromi Police more than two weeks ago.

An autopsy has already been conducted, and the result is awaiting interpretation by police medical experts to guide the next line of action.
