The Enugu State Government has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that innocent residents were attacked in Awgu Local Government Area of the state, describing the claim as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, said no such incident occurred in Awgu or any other part of Enugu State.
Agbo said the report was fabricated to misinform the public and create unnecessary panic among residents.
“We wish to state unequivocally that no such incident occurred. The report is fake, baseless, and exists only in the imagination of those peddling it,” he said.
He added that residents across the state were going about their normal activities without any security breach as alleged in the viral report.
The commissioner urged members of the public to disregard the information and avoid spreading unverified claims capable of causing fear and confusion.
According to him, the administration of Governor Peter Mbah has continued to prioritise security and invest in measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property across the state.
Agbo also alleged that some individuals were deliberately spreading falsehoods to undermine the state’s security reputation.
“It is unfortunate that some individuals, apparently uncomfortable with the prevailing peace, security, and stability in Enugu State, would resort to fabricating falsehoods,” he said.
He warned that anyone found responsible for the creation or dissemination of fake news would face the full weight of the law.
The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and urged residents to rely only on verified and official sources for security-related information.
