FG APPOINTS, INAUGURATES NBTE BOARD AFTER FIVE-YEAR BREAK

The Federal Government has inaugurated the Governing Board of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), ending more than five years without a governing board and unveiling a reform agenda to reposition Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a catalyst for industrialisation, job creation and economic growth.
Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, urged the board to accelerate reforms that will align technical education with industry demands, modernise curricula, certify skilled artisans and enhance Nigeria’s global competitiveness. He described the inauguration as a key step in advancing President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises education and human capital development.
Alausa stressed the need to shift the country’s education system from an emphasis on academic certificates to one focused on producing skilled, innovative graduates capable of driving entrepreneurship and industrial growth. He also tasked the board with implementing the Recognition of Prior Learning framework, updating technical education curricula to reflect emerging technologies and ensuring accountability in the management of public resources.
Responding on behalf of the board, Chairman Prof. Babatunde Salako pledged to reposition technical education, expand access to skills training and promote TVET as a respected pathway to employment, entrepreneurship and national development. NBTE Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Bugaje, described the inauguration as historic, noting that the agency had operated without a governing board for over five years.
