An official of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Dr. Helen Nsirim, has cautioned parents against making double tuition payments for their undergraduate children who have already accessed student loans from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

Nsirim, who serves as the Information and Public Relations Officer at the Federal Information Centre, Port Harcourt, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday.

She revealed that investigations had shown some students deliberately concealed their NELFUND loan status from parents in order to collect tuition fees from them. “This is a wrong approach, especially in these difficult times when many parents are struggling financially,” she said.

The official urged NELFUND to improve transparency by publishing annual lists of loan beneficiaries through universities, national newspapers, and its verified social media platforms. This, she said, would enable parents to verify their children’s status and avoid unnecessary financial strain.

While commending the National Orientation Agency (NOA) for its sensitisation efforts, Nsirim stressed that parents must also take responsibility by staying informed about student loan programmes. “Instead of spending time on social media following trends and gossip, parents should check what NELFUND is doing and encourage their children to apply if eligible,” she advised.

Established to provide financial support to Nigerian students in tertiary institutions, NELFUND aims to improve access to higher education by reducing the financial burden on families.
