An early-morning fire on Sunday gutted a residential building at Tewo-Gbore Street, Ogele Ori-Sunbare in the Eyenkorin area of Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State, destroying parts of the property.

The incident, which occurred at about 12:38 a.m., affected a structure comprising a room-and-parlour self-contained apartment and a two-bedroom flat.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle.

According to the statement, firefighters responded promptly after receiving a distress call from the area, successfully preventing the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings.

The intervention, he noted, helped limit the extent of damage recorded during the incident.

Preliminary investigations by the fire service traced the cause of the fire to improperly quenched charcoal stored within the premises.

Adekunle explained that sacks of charcoal had recently been offloaded, but part of the charcoal was not fully extinguished.

He said the residual heat ignited upon exposure to air, leading to the outbreak and subsequent spread of the fire to the building.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, warned charcoal dealers, transporters, and residents against unsafe handling and storage of combustible materials capable of retaining heat.

He urged the public to avoid keeping such materials close to residential buildings and to promptly report fire incidents to emergency responders.

The fire service reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property through rapid emergency response and ongoing public safety awareness campaigns across the state.

The latest incident comes less than two weeks after a separate fire outbreak destroyed about 24 shops at the Mandate Ultra-Modern Market in Ilorin, the state capital.
