Operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Nigeria Police Force in Anambra State have arrested 17 male suspects over alleged cult-related activities and other acts considered inimical to public morality.

The arrests were carried out in Awka following credible intelligence that led operatives to a suspected hideout where the individuals were apprehended, according to the State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga.

The suspects were reportedly linked to cultism and other criminal activities under investigation.

Items recovered from the scene include dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa, containers of petroleum jelly, condoms, and other exhibits believed to be relevant to the ongoing probe.

The Police PRO listed the suspects as including Okeke Ugochukwu (28), Okoro Christian (17), Goodluck Michael (25), Amuche Michael (24), Ojukwu Divine (26), Ikechukwu Chimeremeze (20), Obinna Ike (30), Nnamdi Desmond (28), Odibendi (20), Emmanuel Onyema (26), among others.

He added that preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects may be affiliated with the Vikings Confraternity, also known as “Bagger”.

According to Ikenga, investigations are also extending to allegations of unlawful and immoral activities reportedly carried out at the location.

The command confirmed that a full-scale investigation has commenced to determine the extent of involvement of the suspects in cult-related activities and other possible offences.

Reacting to the development, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reiterated the command’s stance against cultism, drug abuse, and other criminal acts capable of undermining public peace and societal values, warning that such behaviour will not be tolerated in the state.
